Make sure you have enough time
This is recommended by Finnish sauna association; therefore, it is worth keeping to the following rules. Be aware of the curative sauna effect over your body. Like using medicine, take sauna baths rationally otherwise the effect can be harmful.
Take a shower
This is firstly related to general sauna hygiene. Thus, the advice is important. However, it is a grater pleasure to enter a sauna room with a wet skin after a shower or dip in water. There are two groups of people: those who enter a sauna room with a dry skin and feel better watching how they sweat and those who take a shower before a sauna session. There is no one way to use sauna. Sauna beginners, elder people and people with high blood pressure should have a hot shower or a hot bath first. Others can just wash themselves with warm water. Keep your head dry while washing yourself – your body will tolerate heat better. If you wash yourself with soap before a sauna session your skin will be very sensitive to heat and will feel burning effect. After a shower, cover your head with a towel and damp it with water from time to time while being in a sauna room. Do not wear a rubber hat in the sauna room because it squeezes your head and strangulates veins. Wearing a rubber hat can cause headache and dizziness.
Use a towel or a bench cover
It is related to hygiene as well. However, the towel or any cover protects your skin from burning because the benches are extremely hot. A normal temperature for a sauna room is 80-90°C, the humidity can be increased by throwing water on the stones. You can stay in sauna until you feel good. It is harmful to your health to compete who tolerates a bigger heat. Sauna is not a place for that.
During the first session do not choose the upper benches to lie down. The best advice is to sit on the bottom bench for 5-7 minutes or at least lie on the middle bench. At the beginning your body should get hot at a lower temperature. The process of getting hot will cause sweating. After this stage newcomers should leave the sauna room and cool off until the next session.
You have to sweat in a sauna room!
The most common mistake among the sauna visitors is due to a lack of knowledge about sweating. If a person enters a sauna room, throws 2 or 3 ladles of water on the stones and lies down, he suddenly experiences a heat stroke which blocks sweating. Sweating requires a certain period of time. For sweat secretion you have to increase your body temperature by several degrees and heat is raised inside your body artificially then. It takes approximately 8-12 minutes depending on one’s ability to sweat. A sauna temperature increase does not lead to a quick sweating. In this case 80 ° C sauna temperature means quite the same as 100 ° C heat. When the level of heat and draught in the sauna is too high sweat runs dry on your skin immediately. It is not recommended to use whisks because the leaves start rolling and falling off the braches. It is necessary to ensure a natural air circulation in the sauna room. In a 90—120 °С sauna without stones on the stove dry air irritates nose and throat mucous membrane. Throw some water on the sauna walls and ceiling to moisten the air. Small amount of water thrown on the stones makes the steam less humid, light or soft. If you pour much water on the stones, heavy steam will sink to the lower part of the sauna room and burns the skin. This loads the cardiovascular system in your body and you start feeling tired. This kind of steam is called wet and heavy.
Sharp hot-cold contrast is not recommended
After the first round in the sauna room which takes about 5-7 minutes it is recommended to leave the sauna room and have a rest. Do not stand up quickly because you may loose your balance.
Be aware of the fact that a sudden hot-cold contrast may do you harm. Your body needs some time to adapt. However, cold and rest are very important for sauna treatment. If there is a water pool near the sauna room you may alternate sauna sessions with bathing in water. In winter the toughest sauna visitors jump to an ice-hole or have a “snow bath”.
Warm yourself before washing up and then visit sauna room again
The research was done and its results revealed the fact that earlier a person needed 3 litres of water. Now people use much more soap and water. Actually, it is possible to use less because intense sweating opens the pores and removes sebum, bacteria and dirt. After sweating and washing up a person is clean and fresh.
Alternate bathing and sauna sessions several times
After cold washing up or bathing stay in a sauna with a little bit lower temperature. You can have as many sauna sessions as you like. Finnish people normally visit sauna room 3 times and finally have a shower.
After the last round in the sauna room have a rest and a refreshing drink. Put your clothes on a completely dry body.
Do not be in a hurry, your clothes can wait. Enjoy your wonderful state of mind and health!
It is strongly recommended to avoid strong drinks and over-eating. After a sauna spend some time in a good company with some light snacks and refreshing drinks.
Resisting any drinks 2 hours after a sauna helps to loose weight.
Traditional sauna tips
Usually people do not consider various things that are inevitable for a traditional sauna.
First of all, there is no sauna without benches. Most of all they are installed in 2 or 3 levels to seat more people. People choose a bench level according to the desired temperature. The benches are made of lime, alder or aspen. According to the ancient traditions sauna interior is wooden from the bottom to the top. All kinds of sauna interior parts such as an inside door handle or a safety fence around the stove are made of wood.
The main features of a Russian banya are hot and fragrant steam and a whisk. Most often whisks are birch branch bunches but many people prefer oak, eucalyptus, southernwood and even fir or juniper whisks. The rule for a good whisk is to bundle branches correctly.
There always must be cold water vessels in the Russian banya. We use ladles to pour the water on hot stones in order to create soft steam. It is a dream of all traditional sauna lovers. We need buckets or pails and ladles to mix hot and cold water. These accessories are made of stainless steel, copper or wood. Wooden accessories make sauna treatment more exotic.
In a sauna everything is less complicated because you do not need to create steam continuously for heating up a sauna room. The sauna temperature is usually higher and is not being changed so people usually sit or lie on the benches. Therefore, people pay great attention to sauna benches, box-seats and cushions. For a maximum comfort people cover cold floor with duckboards.
Safety plays a crucial role while having a sauna. Because the temperature in the sauna is higher than in the Russian banya hot metallic interior parts can burn your skin severely. To protect sauna visitors from burning all supplementary sauna interior elements are made of wood. These are fences around the stove, lamp shades and water vessels. It is important to have a thermometer, a hygrometer and a clock to be able to control length of the session as well as temperature and humidity indications.
A traditional sauna requires a certain outfit and footwear. These are hats, robes, cloaks, slippers and skirts. Surprisingly, there are skirts for men also! The skirts ensure comfort, safety and protection from overheat. You should always wear a hat entering a sauna room because your head must be protected from heat. You may wear a felt hat or just cover uoy head with a towel.
Many sauna lovers use various kinds of sauna aromas to experience greater sauna effects. You can choose different fragrant oils and liquids which are sold as special packages. Moreover, there are certain home-made fragrance recipes. Some people like to pour beer or domestic kvass, other prefer the smell of wood and whisks.
For those who like different bathing rituals there may be a cold water pool or a hydro massage pool. The shower cabins may be equipped with cold water tub for over pouring yourself with water.
